What the 2026 State of Smart Manufacturing Report Means for South Africa
Rockwell Automation's 11th Annual State of Smart Manufacturing Report shows an industry that has moved from piloting new technology to putting it into practice. 90% of manufacturers now say digital transformation is essential to remain competitive.
Based on insights from 1,560 decision-makers across 17 manufacturing countries, this year's report highlights a clear shift: fewer businesses are testing smart manufacturing technologies, and more are using them to improve everyday operations. For CraigCor Distribution, and the manufacturers we support across Southern Africa, that shift is already visible on the factory floor.

From Piloting to Performance
Only 18% of manufacturers surveyed are still piloting smart manufacturing technologies, while 59% now use them to support day-to-day operations.
That shift is reflected in where organisations are investing:
- Nearly one-third of operating budgets are dedicated to industrial technology.
- One-third of operations are already AI-augmented, with that figure expected to exceed 50% within four years.
- 48% of manufacturers rank AI and machine learning as the biggest drivers of business outcomes.
Data Collection Isn't the Problem
Manufacturers are generating more data than ever, but only 43% is used effectively.
Most facilities aren't short on sensors or SCADA systems—they're short on connected platforms that transform operational data into meaningful decisions.
That's where an integrated automation and information architecture delivers real value.
Connectivity Demands Stronger Cybersecurity
As manufacturing systems become more connected, cybersecurity has become a core operational priority.
Almost half of manufacturers (46%) experienced a cyber incident during the past year. The greatest area of concern is the connection between IT and OT, making secure, integrated architectures more important than ever.
